The formation of starch, or photosynthesis, always takes place in the thylakoid space. Photosynthesis broken down into –Photo, which is Latin for light and –Sy-, which means to create, literally translates into “to make with light” ("Learn that word," 2005). Photosynthesis is the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into organic compounds using energy from sunlight occurs via three pathways in terrestrial plants (West-Eberhard, Smith & Winterst, 2011). There are three major components that make up Photosynthesis and how it works.
